PPD TASK 2

What Is Industrial Experience?

Industrial experience is a means of getting a feel for the industry that you are considering a career in.  You will be able to gain an understanding of the direction you want your future to take in terms of work. And with reference to graphic design you will be able to narrow down what area you want to go into.

Potential areas could be:

Branding & Identity
Packaging
Point of Sale
Promotion
Typography
Layout
Book Design
Publication
Website Design
Design for Print

What Can You Learn From Industrial Experience?

Most importantly you gain some invaluable to experience as to what your life will be like with in the industry. Something that is also invaluable is it will ive you a chance to network with people that are in a position to help you out in the future.
Industrial experience will also give you and understanding of who you want to be as a designer, as well as allowing you to gain knowledge of the industry as a whole in the sense of how the design process works etc.

What Areas Of The Industry Am i Interested In?

The areas of the industry I am interested in at the moment are based around branding, identity and layout.
I like the idea of giving a new company or rejuvenating the corporate identity of a company. As this is how they are perceived in the public eye.
I have began to have a higher appreciation for the intricacy of layout along with typography, creating an effective message through these two interlinked avenues in graphic design is appealing.

What Form/Format Could Industrial Experience Take?

There are a few forms that industrial experience could take,  this included:

The most common is work experience this could range from one or two days to weeks or months, this will allow you to really get your teeth into the design process and ideologies of the certain company that you do it with. This format is what i will be wanting in the summer.
Another format could be studio visits, these will probably

in last a day, but will allow you to get a vague idea about how a certain studio will work.

freelance work also allows you to grasp an idea as to how the the industry works, however this is done on you terms and will not really give you an accurate representation on how the industry works. but it will allow you to improve your design process, dependant on the project you could work anywhere from a  weekend to a few months.
Attending lectures will also allow you to gather an understanding in a secondary format as to how things work with in the industry.

What Are My Concerns About Work Experience?

I have several concerns about work experience,  perhaps paramount is the worry of being over whelmed by the task i could get set on work experience. This could take the format of not having the ability technically on the programmes they ask me to use, as well as not having good enough time management to meet the deadlines that they set me.
I am also a little concerned that i may not get on well with the company that i get work experience with, again this could take several formats, either the people themselves, or the kind of tasks they set for me.
At the same time i am slightly concerned of patronisation with in the work experience, i do not want to be a tea runner, i want to be given the opportunity to work on some design, weather a live brief or not.  I will have to make  sure that i get work ex with a company that will not allow this to happen.
