Correspondance between summer internship..The Linney Group

Task 4

Looking creating a cv. I believe a simplistic typographic layout is more effective as part of a promotional pack. This will allow simplistic reading with a pure focus on demonstrating strenghts. this should be on an a4 sheet, for simplicity.

TASK 5

below are the business cards i have developed for the interview at the LINNEY design group. I wanted to keep the identity simple, i am also aware that this will not be my final identity as i will be developing this further over the summer, i wanted something simple, and predominately type based. The simplicity in logo will keep a clean visual image.

Using think card allowed gives a strong feel to the business card as well as setting it apart from your average. clean, simple design. The logo can also be applied through out the portfolio etc for the interview and help create my identity.

Below is the portfolio i took to the interview for my summer internship, you can see how the identity can be applied over the media.

Open publication - Free publishing - More edwards

Example of letter head for stainoary set. following the same identity.

BCFA self initiated

The brief was set to design a logo for the BCFA. The Brief itself was very open with no restrictions on colour type etc. what was apparentfrom reading the brief was the association wanted a corporate but clean identity. The imagery used is based around circles, using circles to representthe communicative, connective nature of the association. The Association itself is based around the meeting and greeting of corporate furniture companies. where the colour scheme was taken from fabrics used by the associations network.

Module evaluations

SELF EVALUATION

During this module I feel I have developed as a designer considerably. I have become more aware of how the little things make a big difference, specifically with reference to typographic skills, weather editorial layouts or creating way finding, having an awareness of typography is a fundamental skill as a designer.
I also feel by design ideology has changed, I am more aware of designing for a purpose weather it be boosting sales of salad cream for Heinz or informing people of the direction to walk in, in the Square mile brief, the purpose behind the design effects your outcomes considerably. I think I have began to apply this skill well, and I am starting to have an understanding of what it takes to create a campaign.

I feel I have better understanding of typography in this module, this has given me more confidence to tackle layouts and publications more efficiently, it is something that I will continue to work on.
I feel I have used a broad range of media through out the module, in the sense that I like to push an idea and as a result a range, I enjoy creating an identity and seeing across a range of media.
Logo development is also something I have enjoyed doing during the course of this module, and I believe it to be strength. I will continue to work on the things I have highlighted to try and make them true strengths as the next projects begin.

Through out the entirety of the module I had very little printed material, which is something that I need to work on as next year develops.  Although this module has been submitted digitally, and thus I believe using mock-ups was appropriate. Looking at my work I think an understanding of colour is something that is starting to improve however I do believe my colour theory could be improved, especially with colour relevancies to certain topics, however during my summer placement I am spending three weeks in a design studio and a couple of days in there in house printing studio, this will hopefully allow me to better understand, colour theory and print as a whole.

During this project I have managed time indifferently I have began doing self initiated briefs, which towards the start of this term were taking up to much of my time. This is something that I need to address, as they could cause me to lose marks in the future.
In the next module I will make sure I book a printing slot and print my work, this will enable me to see my work off screen, something that is important as a designer.
I will also consistently blog next module, I feel as if I am losing design time due to me having to go back and blog, this is something that I need to become better at to deal with the time constraints of next year. I think crit preparation is also an important thing for me to work on, especially in the final brief of this module, I was slightly under prepared for final crit, as a result I missed out on some valuable feedback, something that could develop my designing.

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
SAM EDWARDS

  1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Through out ougd202 there is no doubt that I have develop a wider range of skills in using after affect a programme I knew nothing of before the start of this module, from basic key frames to using the cameras and there dimensional forms of the programme, something that was completely foreign to be before the start of the module. I think at the start of the module with the silent movie brief, I grasped relatively well the fundamentals of after effects using key frames to create basic movements. However when you compare this to the ident for the top ten brief, you can see definante improvement as the module has developed. However like learning any new programme there is still a great deal to develop in terms of my application, and undoubtedly after effects as a programme is something I will continue to use. How successful have I been? I always found away to do what I want to do on after effects, even if it is not the quickest or most effective way of doing it. So in that sense successful, however there is always room for improvement.
Since Starting this course on every end of module evaluation I have written I could improve my time management and I think for the first time, it has been improved on this module, I imagine this is down to the complexity of after effects, and giving myself more time to design and as a result develop ideas etc. however of course there is room for improvement still.

  1. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have developed a more structured design production method with more time allocated for the design process itself, this is something that I will defiantly take forward into the next module. Story boarding has also unquestionably helped in the design process, it has allowed me to get my ideas down on paper, and give myself an idea of what the next stage was with moving on, as well as getting timings and alternative ideas down on paper, this is something that I have learnt this module that I will continue to use. Another approach i have began to pick up in this module is always trying find alternative ways of doing the same process, to find the best outcome, weather this be on he software using or at the development stage. I have also become increasingly more aware of the composition of things to increase legibility, and this is something I can take into any aspect of graphic design.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think the legibility of my work is strengths, using different techniques such as opacity and colour to attract the reader to the most relevant fact. This is something that I will continue to develop in all aspects of future work.
I also believe the colour schemes used in the films have been relevant to my chosen subject, and this has highlighted to me that colur is very important, in portraying a message. Something that in the last module a wrote as one of my weaknesses so this is an improvement.
Simplicity is also a strength in my work I think, as in this kind of digital design, you do not want to over complicate a composition, as it is always about readability, so looking at simplistic design is something that I will continue to look at.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The main weaknesses in my work I believe lie in the defining a target audience for the main 60 second clip, although I think it is appropriate now, it took me along time to define the target audience.. Which effected my design production somewhat. The blogging of the entirety of the project, was not consistent enough as a result I was left trying to catch up towards the end, where I could have been spending time elsewhere for example design context, which I think in this module needs some work. I feel I could of also done some more story boards, as I found that once I had an idea I would spend hours trying t make it work, and if I had other story boards with different ideas on them I perhaps would of moved on quick as I would of done an alternative idea. So more development of alternative idea is something that I will work on in the future.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Time Management- I will blog on a more consistent basis, which I will allow me to spend more time on design production to hopefully improve my final outcome.

Plan I will look at developing idea on paper first before jumping into the design stage, this will speed up my design process as well as improving final outcome and grade through development.

I will also continue to develop the research stage through out the process, as soon as the design process began in this module I neglected the research, which also effects your design decision in a positive manner in terms of making informed decisions on colour etc for example.

Design context of this module is something that could also be improved, taking influence from other designers is very important and allows you to come up with bigger and better ideas, and this is something that I will do more of next time as I can only improve my final resolutions.

The last thing I would improve is the clarity of my story boards as if this for a client, the legibility of the design process may have been a little hazy, this kind of goes hand in hand with improving my hand rendering skills. This will help me in the future

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Through out the module I have learnt a great deal, I have a much greater understanding of the print processes along with an appreciation for how greatly my design can be effect by print choices. As well as my layout skills that I developed greatly when working on the publication I did for this project.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

In this project I have been much more concise with my decision making, which has allowed me to spend more time on final outcomes. I also was able to explore print in terms of stock checks etc, this will help in the future and something that I will continue to develop. I have also allowed the primary research to effect my final outcome a lot more in this project which is something that is important in greeting effective final outcomes.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths I have found in my work this module is my ability to create a strong layout, something that I enjoy doing, I will continue to develop this skill along with my weaknesses. Another strength is that I feel my research was very strong and effective my final outcome greatly, having a wide knowledge of your chosen subject is important, and I will continue to do this in the future.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

With in my work this module I feel there wasn’t not a wide enough range of products, I think I spent to long working on the layout of the publication and forgot about the range of products. I need to manage my time better to get a wide range of final outcomes. I also believe that my work could be starting to get a little narrow in terms style and colour pallets I think in the next project I defiantly need to use colour in a more vibrant manner.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1.Time Management
Time management is crucial when designing, this project I found myself rushed at the end, as a result it resulted in a small range of products, this will need to be addresses in the future, so I can develop design further.

2.Blog
Be much more consistent with the blogging, this will allow me to spend more time on the project instead of catching up with blogging. As a result work will improve.

 3. Use a wide ranger range of print processes, even though this is the print module I felt as if I was reluctant to try new things, such as foiling, this needs to be addresses in the future.

4.Research
This although good at the start needs to continue through out the project, so you can get a deeper understanding of the subject, I think this can only influence your design in a positive way.

5. Improve design context, I think having relevant design context in a project can give you a wider range of options when you get to your final designs, in terms of your own personal designs.
